Alternatives

Medal.tv alternatives for clip capture and editing

Medal.tv alternatives sorted by why you are leaving: watermark, length caps, expiring links, capture overhead or VOD clipping, with sourced facts.

The best Medal alternative depends on why you are leaving: a built-in recorder such as NVIDIA’s Instant Replay or Steam Game Recording if you want capture that is part of software you may already have, OBS if you already stream with it, Outplayed if you want another auto-highlight recorder, and an AI clipper such as OpusClip or Powder if what you really need is clips from a finished stream VOD. Stay on Medal if the watermark and upload cap are the only problems, because Medal’s June 2026 blog gives Premium at $7.99 a month billed annually ($9.99 monthly), as of 8 November 2026. This page maps each reason for leaving to the tools whose published pages address it.

Which reason matches you

Medal is a game recorder and sharing site, so leaving it falls into two families: replace the recorder, or replace the clipping step. Medal’s facts are from its Premium page and a June 2026 blog post, as of 8 November 2026.

Reason for leaving What the sources say Where to look first
Watermark on free clips Free clips carry one; Premium removes it Local recorders (no sharing site)
Upload length cap Premium page: 20 minutes on free; blog: unlimited, up from 30 Check your account
Links expire Premium adds never-expiring links Self-hosted files
Quality cap Free uploads limited to 1080p Local recorders
Capture overhead No overhead figure on the pages read Compare tools yourself; planned test
Need clips from a stream VOD Medal is a recorder; a guide separates recorders from VOD tools AI clippers

Medal’s Premium page says free clips carry a watermark and Premium removes it, free uploads are limited to 1080p while Premium keeps original quality, and Premium adds auto subtitles, no ads and never-expiring links. The June 2026 blog gives Premium at $9.99 a month or $7.99 a month billed annually, unchanged, and says clip upload length is now unlimited, up from 30 minutes. The Premium page gives 20 minutes as the cap without Premium, while the June 2026 blog says Premium’s limit moved from 30 minutes to unlimited. These may describe different tiers, so check your account for the current figure. A 14-day free trial is offered, and Medal’s pages did not state a free storage cap.

If you would rather record locally with no upload step, the tools below save files to disk. They have no sharing site, so the watermark question does not arise in the same way, but also no link hosting.

NVIDIA Instant Replay

NVIDIA’s ShadowPlay page describes an Instant Replay feature that saves the last 30 seconds of gameplay, lists manual capture up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps, and claims “minimal impact to performance” without a number (NVIDIA). The page presents it as part of the NVIDIA App, lists no minimum GPU, and says RTX 40-series owners can record in AV1. Because it is NVIDIA’s own feature, confirm it works on your card before you rely on it. The downside for clip-making is no editor or sharing site on that page. NVIDIA’s page describes saving the last 30 seconds; it does not say whether that length can be changed.

Steam Game Recording

Steam has a Game Recording feature with a support page (Steam Support), but only a page shell loaded for us on 8 November 2026, so we state no buffer length, settings or limits for it. Open the page yourself before relying on it.

OBS Studio and its replay buffer

OBS is the free recorder many streamers already run, and it has a replay buffer feature for saving the last moments of play. We could not open an official OBS page describing it, so we state no settings from OBS itself. Medal’s own comparison table lists the OBS replay buffer as “5 s to 6 h, set by you”, which is a competitor’s summary rather than OBS documentation. See Medal vs OBS replay buffer for the decision.

Outplayed

Overwolf’s Outplayed page says the app is “100% free”, automatically records highlights, lets you share directly from the app and does not harm FPS (Outplayed). The same page says both “Over 600 games supported” and “Over 3000 games supported”, so we do not use either figure. It does not mention watermarks. Overwolf’s support article on using Outplayed returned a 404 when we checked, so we state nothing about logins or watermark removal. The “Doesn’t harm FPS” line is a vendor claim, not a measurement.

AMD Instant Replay

AMD’s Adrenalin software includes recording and replay features. Our fetch of AMD’s page timed out, so we state no GPU support, replay length or overhead for it. Check AMD’s own page.

If you actually need clips from a stream VOD

Medal’s own guide says its replay buffer holds the last 15 seconds to 10 minutes (saved with F8) and that “in supported games the highlights save themselves”; its comparison table lists Eklipse as working on the stream VOD in the cloud rather than on your PC, as Medal’s vendor summary. If you stream and want clips found in a finished 3-hour VOD, a recorder is the wrong category.

  • OpusClip lists Twitch, Kick and Medal.tv among its import sources (help article), but OpusClip’s Plans article names Twitch and Medal.tv among the sources added on Pro, not Free or Starter, so check the import screen before relying on Medal links. Free exports have a watermark. See Medal vs OpusClip and the OpusClip review.
  • Powder says it is free for gamers, Windows only, imports finished Twitch, YouTube or Kick VODs by link and supports 40+ games (Powder). Its /pricing address returned a not-found error when we requested it on 8 November 2026, so we know of no published paid prices. The 40+ supported games are separate from its “Universal Game Support” option for other games, which the homepage says identifies heightened emotion from the audio feed.
  • Eklipse lists Twitch, Kick and YouTube Live connections and says Premium starts at $24.99 per month (Eklipse homepage FAQ). See the Eklipse review.
  • Twitch’s own Clip That and Auto Clips are covered at Twitch Auto Clips.

See best gaming clip recording software and best AI clipper for long VODs. Clipping other creators’ streams raises permission issues covered in Twitch clips to TikTok and Shorts.

When staying on Medal is the right call

Stay on Medal if you want one app that records, trims, uploads and shares, and the watermark and 1080p cap on free uploads are acceptable, or if Premium at $7.99 a month billed annually (per Medal’s June 2026 blog) is cheaper than assembling separate tools. Premium also lists auto subtitles and no ads. The cost of staying is the watermark and expiring links on free, an upload cap whose current figure you should confirm in your account, and no published capture-overhead number. If you only dislike the watermark, the arithmetic is simple: $7.99 times 12 is $95.88 a year at the annual rate, against $0 for local recorders that lack a sharing site. Whether Medal’s capture costs more frames than OBS or NVIDIA’s feature on your hardware is not answered by any page we read. A planned single-PC test would log plan and version and archive raw clips; it has not been run. See methodology, the clipper picker, and the alternatives hub.

Last checked 8 November 2026. Prices and limits change; we re-check monthly.

Not tested yet

What a real test of this would need. None of it has been run.
